Life Lessons...

Dear Given,

You're tucked in bed at this very moment, deep asleep and completely safe.

Just hours before, we found ourselves in a fine conversation that lasted for several hours.  It started in the parking lot as we were leaving the pool, continued as we rode in the very back of the truck together, intensified as we hung out in the garage sitting on the tailgate (you eating cheese-its and drinking capri sun), lingered over dinner, and wrapped up while you were pulling the covers up to your chin.  It reminded me of how mature you are and how much I enjoy talking to you and getting to know you better.  But it also reminded me how deeply we can hurt, how one's innocence is jeopardized so early and easily, and how powerful are the words we say to ourselves...in our heads.

You shared some things with me about comments other kids have made about you, and we talked about why people say hurtful things.  We discussed the importance of self-talk, turning hurtful and negative thoughts into neutral, helpful, or positive ones.  And we shared some sad stories...vowing to remain vigilant in our mission to show kindness to others.

The next time you doubt yourself or feel the sting of someone's careless words or know the sharp, cutting pain from an insult skillfully directed at you, I hope you will remember tonight's talk.  I pray you will be the author of your own thinking and you will carefully select which messages you carry with you through your life.  Always remember...when you change who you are because of someone's hateful or hurtful comments, you give away some of your power to them.

With God's help, you will continue to grow into the man he has designed you to be.  He has a plan for you, sweet son, and we are excited to see it unfolding before our very eyes.  Remember, I am always ready to listen when you are ready to talk.

All my love,
Mom
